Read this book!

This book was not on my radar until my daughter (a Rachel Hollis ex fan) asked me if it was on NetGalley. I feel very lucky to have got an advanced copy of Under the Influence by Noelle Crooks. I know very little about the Hollis drama, and this IS a fictionalized tale, but I could easily see this happening not only with Rachel Hollis and many influencers. I've also had this happen in my life when I worked sales for a Fortune 500 company; I'm sure many readers will recognize and have experienced the toxic traits of the lead antagonist, Charlotte.

Devil Wears Prada meets Influencers nails the "elevator pitch.' However, I found this book far easier to read, and more engaging. I can't quit put my finger on WHY but I did enjoy it more than Devil Wears Prada. It's a fast read. I appreciated that the romance was kept PG and that the book focused more on Harper and her friendships and family.

Will be recommending to everyone. You don't have to be an ex Hollis fan to enjoy this book - it's great entertainment no matter who you are. #BestFiction #ReadThisPeople

Tentative Release Date: August 8 2023
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-5833100020024331302022-06-24T05:30:00.000-07:002022-06-24T05:30:14.006-07:00Just Tyrus

Just Tyrus is the true story of Tyrus – a celebrity known well in the wrestling world, Snoop Dog world, and Conservative talk show world.

I came to know of Tyrus through the talk show Gutfeld! Not only is he funny, but this black man also speaks profound common sense.

I love the audio book because he reads it himself, and his voice is familiar and oddly, relaxing!

His story is one of a really tough upbringing. However, Tyrus does not dwell in Victimhood. However, author Melissa uses the F word and this book and these events are EXACTLY when/why the F word SHOULD be used.

This is a story about a wonderful family; hard working, loving, loyal. Melissa's mother watches Dr. Oz and realizes her extended abdomen that she has been hiding from everyone is ovarian cancer.

This is about the journey (quite short) of going to the ER for the abdomen swelling to the untimely death of her mother. Horrible mistakes were made. The author is still having a hard time (after ten years) of dealing with the loss. This is a beautiful, sad, loving, tribute to her mother, Constance Burns. And it's also a sort of "how to navigate" and "how to advocate" for yourself or a loved one.

What struck me most, was the tight family bond this family shared. Many people lack those bonds in todays society. I have long been an outspoken person like Melissa. I've had to advocate for myself and my family. I understand what it's like, so this book resonated with me. I feel it would be a wonderful helpful book to ANYONE (I think it should be required reading in highschool!) because there will always be sickness, there will always be human errors, and one needs to be prepared to advocate for oneself (especially today when hospitals are limiting visits - a practice I'm afraid is here to stay because it's "less work" when there is a family member advocating for patients).

Mrs. Burns sounds like a great woman, gone far too soon, and this book is a treasure, one I wish I didn't have to be written, but no doubt, will help countless people.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-70457884833752057412022-05-20T09:11:00.005-07:002022-05-20T09:11:46.709-07:00Sewing Love by Sanae Ishida

I totally related to the story behind Sewing Love. Intimated by THE MACHINE, the TOOLs, the LANGUAGE. I bought a machine in the winter and it sat. I watched plenty of youtube videos. I read books and magazines. And still. I made some horrible (but funny!) items. Author Ishida addresses what seems to be the big sewing elephant in the newbie room: anxiety about....everything. Mainly, though, anxiety about getting started, "Doing the Damn The Thing." Her story is relatable and humorous. Ishida then offers patterns (slopers) that can be customized - tops/dresses/tunics, bottoms, outerwear.

Highly recommend for the conversational tone and ease at learning.

To be fair, I have not attempted to make anything, only because there isn't time at the moment. However! I fully feel when I have time to do create, Ishida has given me the confidence I need to forge ahead! The fact I choose this book and couldn't stop reading it (finished in a day/night), is what make NetGalley work for authors (as well as readers/book industry). The ability to "try" books that we wouldn't normally seek out.

Aesthetica is beautifully written. Artful.

It's the story of status, "influencers," addictions to social media, status, surgery.

A few sex scenes (which I tend to shy away from in books) - however, tastefully done, and a needed "character" if you will, in the story.

Our girl Ann grows by the end of the story, but how much?

It's a warning, a heeding, a tragic tale, but also, a beautiful written book.

Expected published date: Nov 22, 2022.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-87334784664910069352022-04-12T06:04:00.000-07:002022-04-12T06:04:03.408-07:00Party Like A Rockstar - JT Harding

Party Like a Rockstar: The Crazy, Coincidental, Hard-Luck, and Harmonious Life of a Songwriter by JT Harding.

I'm a Nashville, Country Music, fan. Party Like a Rockstar was a fun, interesting (ok, fabulous!) read.

JT Harding, successful singer/songwriter, tells an interesting tale, starting from his youth to his success, and it was a long, hard, crazy, interesting road.

Now, if you're a songwriter/singer looking for good advice, you'll find it toward the end of the book; all the elements that create a good song, writing with other artists, etc.

HOWEVER, what is useful, is the road journeyed to arrive at his number one hits (and one hit doesn't mean you've made it!). Grinding. Crazy jobs.

Halfway through the book, he finds out who his real father is...what a crazy story! It also makes one wonder...are traits somehow passed on biologically?

He name drops often, this adds to the book, but at times, it's a bit distracting, as if JT is bragging in a way. There are times the writing comes off as a bit egotistical - but he has so much enthusiasm and hands out many compliments to those in his orbit, that it doesn't really take away from the book. One thing that overshadowed the book were the overuse of analogies. Every other sentence seemed to use an analogy. I have a feeling that has to do with songwriting, it comes naturally, but less is more in longform writing.

Fun, engaging, fascinating. Lessons on grinding, winning, losing it all, grinding back. to success.

All in all, I'd give it 4.5 stars.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-4597810420484819152022-03-30T07:00:00.004-07:002022-03-30T07:00:20.572-07:00The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand
The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand - release date on/around June 14 2022.

This is one of those books....do I read it all in one sitting, or do I savor it as long as possible.

Well - I should have savored it, because this character driven, romantic, haunted, make you hungry from all the wonderful food descriptions, lasted all of a day and a half.

And I'm depressed The Hotel Nantucket is over.

Maybe because author Hilderbrand stated she's retiring after this (but hey, if Tom Brady can change his mind...there's hope!)

I haven't read ALL of Hilderbrand's books, but out of the many I have read, I'd say this is her absolute best.

All the characters were problematic, but loveable, and grew and changed for the better.

As always, Nantucket is also a featured character.

How is Ms. Hilderbrand NOT the Mayor of Nantucket????

Loved the Shoutouts to Peloton.

The one...slight criticism; the social media/slang references. There is a touch of magical realism in this book, which is delightful. Who wouldn't hope that it's possible to help your family in the afterlife? I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say the characters were all vivid, rich, well done. There were many switches of view points, but it flowed nicely and simply had this reader eager for more.

There was a touch of political polarization, but just a brief mention. This reader (and many others I know) wish that sports, books, movies, etc, would stick to entertainment and leave political ideas to the news. Also, for me, the political point was lost as the setting of the novel depicted an honest police chief, mostly open minded and accepting citizens in Nantucket.

It felt more like Hilderbrand was inserting it to perhaps to show she is "aware" - it was a subtle bounce out of the story and took a few pages to find my way back into the heart and soul of the story.

I truly cared about all these characters. The mystery was a nice touch, but easy enough to figure out.

I will be putting this book into as many hands as possible.

Another Golden Book by Hilderbrand!

Available June 1st, 2021
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-33839429475556953112021-05-01T04:38:00.002-07:002021-05-01T04:38:15.029-07:00See Jane Snap by Bethany Crandell
See Jane Snap by Bethany Crandell gets an easy 4 stars, leaning a bit towards five.

Author Crandell has a wonderful gift for dialogue. When characters have conversations, they flow easily.

Jane is a very likeable character (for the most part) and it's somewhat easy to predict the outcome, however, the story is well written. Very much in the vein of Alice Hoffman. In some ways authors way with description reminded me of Ray Bradbury.

This is writing at it's finest. Well paced, lyrical, characters that you root for.

And the best part is, the magic is believable.

Kind of like Field Of Dreams. It seemed possible.

Paige Crutcher will be an author to watch for anyone that loves magical realism and/or appreciates writing as an art. Amazing.

I'm a culture junkie. Yes, I watch Bravo TV. I also listen to Country Music. And I'm fascinated by politics.

Though I'm accustomed to liking more emotional reads (Dana Perino/ Andrew Breitbart for reference), Mr. Will wrote a book I will highly recommend to anyone wondering how we've become so divided. Or anyone curious about the nature of politics.

Mr. Will examines the last thirteen years; from 2008 to 2020 and reflections on our culture, examining the many ways in which expertise, reason, and manners are continually under attack in our institutions, courts, political arenas, and social venues. His writing is a bit more dry than what I usually read, still, it's a wonderful read that flows well and has a sense of humor.

Other topics addressed include the American Revolutionary War, historical figures from Frederick Douglass to JFK, as well as a scathing assessment of how State of the Union Addresses are delivered in the modern day. Mr. Will also offers his perspective on American socialists, anti-capitalist conservatives, drug policy, the criminal justice system, climatology, the Coronavirus, the First Amendment, parenting, meritocracy and education, China, fascism, authoritarianism, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, and the morality of enjoying football.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-18995767401144863912021-03-10T04:31:00.004-08:002021-03-10T04:31:44.777-08:00Living Your Dreams by Mark Victor Hansen
Living Your Dreams by Mark Victor Hansen (audiobook)

For me, this audio book was a miss. Starting with the opening and the repetitive "Dreams of...finding the perfect mate, dreams of innovations, dreams of a better sex life," etc...this went on and on. I wanted to quit listening as it quickly became silly.

I've been reading self help books for many years, and am very familiar with Mark Victor Hansen. For me, this book was nothing new. That doesn't mean there aren't other readers out there that won't enjoy or value this book: they'd just have to be new to the self help industry.

I'm really picky with narrators, and didn't enjoy this narrator of Living Your Dreams.

For a newbie seeking a self help motivational book, I'd say this book is 4 stars. For me? Sadly, a hard pass (though in my young years I would have loved it). It doesn't say anything new that hasn't been said before.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-52269738823727257432021-02-07T05:57:00.002-08:002021-02-07T05:57:18.622-08:00Embassy Wife by Katie Crouch
Abroad by Katie Crouch was one of my favorite books. I devoured it and pimped it out to everyone as if she was a family member I was proud of.

I also loved Girls In Trucks.

To say I'm disappointed in Embassy Wife would be an understatement.

It started off well, I was hooked and invested in these characters, though they were all shallow and unlikeable, and one was an outright idiot (who unbelievably is offered something at the end of the book that was ludicrous).

Towards the last half of the book, there became far too many coincidences. For most readers, coincidences in fiction are a killer. And then it just becomes a total farce.

Putting politics into this book might make it appealing to some readers, but most readers I speak to, are tired of politics. Politics has seeped into everything: from Peloton to Sports to Corporations. Readers desire escape, not the authors political agenda. I feel none of these characters actually grew by the end of the book. One other sticking point, Crouch will throw in many Namibia references (animals, food, sayings) but won't give a brief explanation. At least describe the food! I'm giving this two stars, probably because Abroad was SUCH A GREAT BOOK and I expected better.

Embassy Wife is scheduled to be released in July of 2021
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-40040144512773644952021-01-31T04:14:00.003-08:002021-01-31T04:14:47.838-08:00Who Owns You?
Something to think about from the great, smart, wise, Walter Williams.

Who owns you? The book centers on Morane, the grand-daughter of Rozenn. Though close to her Grandmother, Rozenn leaves the family home to Morane's sister and leaves an old silver compass with initials on it to Morane. Morane has lost her boyfriend, her business is struggling, and she focuses on what could have made Rozenn turn her back on her?

Morane finds clues that lead her to Brittany which was under German occupation in 1941. The story seamlessly move from Rozenn's point of view starting when she was a teenager and living in Paris - taking us up to how she and her family fled to Brittany and what happened to her and her family. Her part of the story is fascinating and I was a bit sad to leave her behind when it switched to Morane's point of view. Morane's story, at times, was not as page turning, but still interesting. as she wound her way through clues. The ending was a bit too tidy but perfectly satisfying. I could see this movie on the big screen!

To Be Released On or Around: March 25, 2021
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964898449781502134.post-26374032448863193012021-01-17T05:28:00.005-08:002021-01-17T05:28:29.731-08:00The Sinful Lives of Trophy Wives by Kristin Miller Pub Date: 20 Jul 2021
The Sinful Lives of Trophy Wives

by Kristin Miller

Pub Date: 20 Jul 2021

A good book, interesting story. 3 "Trophy" Wives are friends in an exclusive neighborhood. One of the wives is getting married for the third time, after her first two husbands died mysteriously.

There were some pauses for me. Most of the characters were not likeable. And by the end, they hadn't really changed. There was no one to "root" for. That being said, the characters were built enough that it was easy to fall into their stories. Plenty of twists and turns to keep me reading for two days (and during football playoffs which annoyed my husband - haha).

All in all, I'd easily recommend this to readers.
